DRIVER/FIELD OPERATOR, ME
(Full-time, year round)

Garbage to Garden, Inc. is a curbside composting company based in Portland, ME with 24 full-time employees. We have the benefits of a large corporation and the family-like atmosphere of a start-up company.

We're looking for an enthusiastic, hard-working individual to join our team as Field Operator (Driver) to help us serve the growing number of Maine households and businesses composting with us.

Field Operators are professionals trained to operate a truck and trailer on independent collection routes. The right candidate is someone who is ready to start early each day, work hard, and take pride in their daily accomplishments knowing they left the world a little better off than when they started.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Operates vehicle and performs all tasks in accordance with Garbage to Garden Official Standards and safety rules, OSHA, and DOT as well as all local, state and federal laws.
• Performs pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle and documents utilizing the DVIR.
• Follows route assignments as directed and completes end of day documentation and check out process.
• Performs all duties as scheduled by Manager or Dispatch and assists other field operators as directed.
• Attends and participates in all scheduled training programs and meetings as required by Garbage to Garden or Manager.
• Works closely with Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
• Communicates customer requests to Dispatch.
• Notifies Manager of any incidents, accidents, or property damage.
• Notifies Dispatch of service interruptions.
• Immediately reports all unsafe situations or service related issues to Dispatch.

Qualifications

• Standard Class C driving license with a clean driving record.
• Preferred: Experience operating a trailer is preferred but not required.
• Preferred: Experience operating a vehicle requiring CDL / a valid Class A or B CDL is a plus
• Must be at least 21 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States.
• Capable motor coordination; arm, hand, legs.
• Able to exert physical effort in handling (pushing, pulling, lifting, etc.) objects more than 75 pounds frequently.

Garbage to Garden provides zero-waste event services, introducing composting and recycling to a variety of events each year. We are seeking enthusiastic, hardworking individuals to join our Event Crew for the 2022 event season (roughly April - October). Be a part of our commitment to closing the food loop and diverting waste from landfills!

Responsibilities:

• Setting up and monitoring event waste management stations
• Keeping grounds clear of all litter throughout events
• Sorting waste to maximize diversion and maintain a high level of cleanliness within designated area at all times
• Removing waste from site according to event contract
• Cleaning up site following the event & breaking down and packing up all Garbage to Garden equipment and supplies
• Accurately recording, tracking, and submitting waste audit information
• Being educated and informed (we will train!) about recycling and composting in the local area, as well as our event waste management program, to pass this info along to event attendees, vendors, and venue staff
• Being a professional, positive, and responsible representative of Garbage to Garden at all events
• If the candidate is interested, there may be opportunities to represent Garbage to Garden and share information about the services we provide at community events

All applicants must:

• Be 18+
• Have a valid Maine License and reliable transportation to and from Garbage to Garden HQ
• Be available on nights & weekends
• Be comfortable working outdoors
• Be able to consistently lift 50-75 lbs and work on foot for up to 12 hours
• Be committed to learning the ins and outs of composting and recycling

DELIVERY DRIVER/RAISED BED INSTALLER
Full-time, Seasonal

We are looking for honest & enthusiastic individuals who are ready to work hard, work fast, & have fun. Our Delivery Driver/Raised Bed Installer is responsible for the delivery and installation of our raised garden beds, as well as bulk compost, to customers around southern Maine.

This position is full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:00pm. We would also consider a part-time schedule for the right candidate. Seasonal April 1, 2022 - July 1, 2022 with possibility to extend the season.

Responsibilities include:

• Pre-trip inspection of truck, loading soil and lumber
• Safe operation of 26k non-cdl dump truck.
• Greeting customers at their home to determine where garden beds will be installed.
• Unloading lumber and constructing standard-size garden beds.
• Using a wheelbarrow to move soil and fill beds.

PRODUCTION WORKER - PART-TIME, SEASONAL

Job Description

We are looking for honest & enthusiastic individuals who are ready to work hard, work fast, & have fun. Production workers are responsible for supporting operations by ensuring that we have the thousands of bags of compost necessary for smooth operations and assisting in production of our raised beds.

We have opportunities for part-time shifts Monday through Friday from 8am-4pm, schedule and hours based on company needs and candidate desire. Seasonal April 1, 2022 -July 1, 2022 with

• Filling bags of compost
• Cutting and staining lumber
• Partial construction of raised beds
• Assisting with load and unloading trucks as needed

Farmers Market Representative (Part-time, Seasonal)

We are looking for an enthusiastic, hardworking individual to represent Garbage to Garden at local farmers markets. Our Farmers Market Representatives are our ambassadors in the community and the ideal candidate will be passionate about composting and eager to share this passion with their community.

Responsibilities

• Represent Garbage to Garden at farmers markets and other community events
• Greet all market-goers and GTG participants in a friendly manner
• Engage market goers about the benefits of composting and how our services work
• Transport market equipment/supplies to/from the market(s) each week
• Onboard new participants
• Attend other events and trainings as available
• Provide weekly summaries regarding interactions, sign ups, engagements with existing customers, and general attendance at events
• Share event photos with GtG headquarters to help promote the markets and our presence there on social media

Requirements

• Ability to work well independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to comfortably interact with all kinds of people
• Ability to lift and carry 50+ lbs
• Ability to walk/stand for long periods of time
• Valid driver’s license
• Personal vehicle to transport market equipment and supplies (mileage will be reimbursed)
• Weekly availability: Wednesdays 10:30am-7:00pm, Thursdays 1:30pm-8:30pm, Saturdays 7:00am-2:00pm

CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE/DISPATCHER
(Part time, year round)

The Customer Service/Dispatch office is the “hub” of the organization. Our Customer Service Representatives/Dispatchers facilitate the relationship between Garbage to Garden and our participants, interacting directly with current and future customers to solve problems and answer questions related to the services we provide, account billing, and general education about composting in general. The CSR/dispatcher also acts as the liaison between GTG’s office/administrative staff and shop-based operations staff and our field-based drivers. In coordination with other company departments, the CSR/dispatch team is responsible for maintaining the GTG reputation for excellent service and ensuring that all work is completed at the end of the day.

Responsibilities and duties:

Customer Service

• Answer incoming phone calls and emails from Garbage to Garden’s residential participants and commercial clients regarding service issues, billing issues, and general inquiries
• Handle all communications confidently, in a knowledgeable, articulate, and friendly manner
• Take precise, detailed notes about conversations to accurately track and update service issues
• Create, delegate, and track work orders for our field operation team
• Thoroughly learn all aspects of Garbage to Garden’s residential, commercial, and event services
• Think quickly while actively resolving customers issues
• Work closely with the rest of the team to provide the highest quality service possible

Dispatch

• Act as liaison between Garbage to Garden’s office and operations staff
• Maintain contact with field operators throughout the day
• Work closely with the operations team to ensure that all work is completed at the close of each day
• Delegate service alerts & modify routes to accommodate customer needs
• Cultivate strong relationships with both drivers and customers

Administrative Support

• Support management with additional administrative tasks based on interest, experience, and current operational needs

Qualifications:

• 1-3 years customer service experience & possess a strong customer service mindset
• Must be prompt, organized, and detail oriented when it comes to incoming data, communicating, and follow through
• Ability to manage multiple simultaneous work assignments and be comfortable multi-tasking in an office that has people coming and going, phones ringing, and a radio chattering in the background
